Enquiry of Archaeologist Cromer Road
Pre-Construct Archaeology report on the land of Cromer Road and Church Lane, Mundesley, May 2024.
Denbury Homes commissioned an archaeological survey of the site proposed for the housing development on the land off Cromer Road and Church Lane. This is a pre-planning application report, and was written in May 2024. Further archaeological work will take place when a formal planning application is made.
Abstract from the report:
The work recorded the surviving remains of a 13th-century windmill in the form of a
circular ditch and a central pit likely to have been associated with the mill’s foundation.
An assemblage of medieval pottery sherds and ceramic building material was
recovered from these features. Evidence for contemporary features in the surrounding
trenches was lacking suggesting that the windmill stood in isolation although several
undated ditches in Trench 8 close to the road frontage on the east side of the site
could be medieval in date. Ditches in Trenches 1, 7 and 8 represent a field system
seemingly established in the early post-medieval period as determined by the
presence of several brick fragments.
